Introduction to Seasalter Sailing Club
Seasalter Sailing Club is on the North Kent coast 2 miles west of Whitstable and 5 miles from the end of the M2 motorway. Our focus is on club racing and leisure sailing, of dinghies and catamarans, in a relaxed atmosphere suitable for single and family members. This year we are changing things around to bring together the sailing and social aspects of the club and to introduce more fun events to encourage both sailors and non-sailing family members to make more of our excellent site.
The clubhouse is adjacent to the sea wall with panoramic views from the 1st floor clubroom across Whitstable Bay, the main sailing area. There is public car parking adjacent and the club has its own boat storage and camping field for sailing members on the other side of the road. The field is only 70 metres from the ramp over the sea wall leading to the gently sloping sand and pebble beach, with less than 10 metres to the high water mark.
The club can offer you informal training by way of coaching and buddying, also valuable crewing opportunities with more experienced sailors. Complete beginners may find benefit in attending an RYA Level 2 certificate dinghy sailing course at Dover Watersports Centre or other centre prior to joining us.
Organised sailing takes place during weekends from March to November when tides are suitable and a number of members also sail during weekdays in the summer months. The sea is shallow and tides permit approximately 2 hours sailing either side of high tide.
The Club places no restriction on classes of sailing boat and there is a near 50/50 split between dinghies and catamarans. Club racing is split into two fleets by PY handicap rating (Fast Fleet950). No keelboats or powerboats are permitted. The largest fleet comprises 30 Sprint 15 catamarans with Dart18, Enterprise, Laser, Miracle, Mirror and Pacer classes making up the majority of the rest of the fleet.
The Club currently owns five boats for use on timetabled sailing days, on payment of a donation towards upkeep, by members - subject to prior booking. These are currently two Laser Pico dinghies, a Miracle dinghy 1 Sprint 15 and a Dart 18 catamaran.
The Club has full changing and galley facilities and a Licensed bar. Two Club dinners and several informal social evenings are held in the clubroom and bar during the year. Members are expected to carry out a small number of duties each year in the race tower or on the patrol boats, training will be given. This is a great way to learn what goes on and to meet other sailors.
