June and July 2016 - Summer sailing at Seasalter

June and July 2016 - summer sailing - fun and excitement at Seasalter……….

………..and don’t miss more photos on Facebook.

We started the month with our Club Open day, this year focusing on club members’ families and friends, giving an opportunity for us to sail with our friends, meet new people and share our boats and sailing experiences in a relaxed atmosphere.  It turned into a fantastic day, thanks to great support from duty teams on and off the water, galley volunteers working flat out to feed hungry sailors.

The following week saw a facelift for the club boat fleet, re-tuning and replacing standing rigging for the Sprint 15 and Dart 18 catamarans, “Ocelot”, “Salt e Ears” and a polishing and checking over session for the Pico and Miracle dinghies, “Piccolo”, “Puddleduck” and “It’s a……”

The first “Setting Sun evening cruise” of the year saw the SSC fleet disappear into the distance to……. where else?  the pub!  A great sail to the Shipwrights Arms, in Faversham Creek. The fleet included three generations of Carters, it felt like a family day out. A lovely reach up the Swale estuary in a force 4 south westerly, followed by a series of short tacks up the creek to the pub. A pint or two of local ale then a leisurely run back as the sun started to set. A great way to finish off the weekend. Thanks to all those who joined in our first short cruise.

Towards the end of June we held our Annual Club Regatta, with boats and sailors dressed for the event, flags flying and the club buzzing with family, friends and visitors. Again, a big thank you to everyone who played a part, with 18 boats on the water, more than 24 sailors, the duty teams and galley helpers were stretched to the limit. The winners? Best dressed boat to Rob, Caroline and Ben. Youngest sailors Leon and Conrad. Who tried the hardest? Sue and Henry. Overall third place to long John Long, second to Ian and first to the Pico hero Jason. What a great day. Cakes were lovely too!

Who would guess that on the same day intrepid (=mad?) cat sailors, Kevin and Dave on a Tornado and Mark and Paul on a Hurricaine would decide to compete in the annual 2016 Nore race from Benfleet Yacht Club, a long distance challenge starting and finishing at Southend Pier with over 100 craft taking part.  Kev and Dave gained 2nd place, well done for “flying the flag” for SSC.  Also well done to Mark and Paul who decided to take the short cut from Kent to the race start in Essex by sailing there and then returned later in the afternoon  to support  home club Seasalter by sailing in the regatta!  What a day – congratulations all round.

July brought high winds and exciting sailing at our club and elsewhere for Kevin and Dave on their Tornado.  Not content with 2nd place a couple of weeks ago they decided another challenge was irresistible, so off they went again, this time entering the East Coast Piers race, from Marconi Sailing Club, Essex.  A long distance catamaran race of over 50 miles, sailed in winds in excess of 30mph and massive waves, the boys are justly very proud of winning the trophy.  Well done lads, congratulations from all your home support team and friends at the club, thanks for putting Seasalter on the map again!
