SSC News - 2018 Spring Sailing

An exciting start to the new season with sailing in some challenging weather for the hardy SSC sailors.
Following a well attended shore training session in the clubhouse on 10 March, boats were rigged and sailing started with the Sally Forth series on a chilly 24 March. Small fleets, 5 cats and 5 dinghies, enjoyed close racing with worthy winners Paul Shields and Judy Wilkinson taking the trophies.
The traditional Ace Cup races over Easter were held in wintry weather but this did not deter Tornado sailors Kevin D and Matt O and the hardy Dart 18 sailors John B and Karen B, with Sprint 15 ‘ers Jane B and Paul S battling it out. Another trophy win for Paul S! The dinghy fleet consisting of Rachel A, a recent Duke of Edinburgh award winner, Dave C, Jason M and Nick F made for tough competition, all sailing Lasers of some description! Well done to Nick F, first trophy of the season.
April and May, the Cedric Wren, Saturday series and Jubilee Cup are now underway, fleet numbers are growing, 12 + cats and 6+ dinghies most weekends. Our “free sailing” sailors are now enjoying some leisurely sailing too, with new members keen to test their new boats. The May bank holiday weekend brought brilliant sunshine and perfect wind for sailing. Some club members enjoyed a whole weekend camping with their families, each day ending with the Seasalter sunset over the Swale. Thank you to David Cramphorn for capturing the day perfectly with many photos for our website, even spotting a seal close to shore, curious to see what was going on!
We are already welcoming new members too, keen to support the club and participating willingly in many ways.
With the Club Regatta on 27 May and Friends and Family Open Day 1st July we hope for more exciting sailing to come, alongside our regular weekly racing timetable to keep us all on our toes!
